How to Choose a Submersible Pump in the UAE (Sizing Guide)
Flow, head, solids, supply and materials: the five checks that decide which submersible pump you should buy.
Read guideA PVC submersible pond pump is a light, rust-free pump that sits underwater to circulate pond water, run fountains and drain clean water from pits and terraces. Alden’s DOLPHINE range covers ½, 1 and 1½ HP for UAE homes, gardens and small commercial water features.

A PVC submersible pond pump is a compact electric pump with a plastic body that sits fully underwater to circulate pond water, feed fountains and waterfalls, or drain clean to lightly dirty water. Alden’s DOLPHINE range comes in ½, 1 and 1½ HP for homes, gardens and small commercial water features.
Picture a villa courtyard in Sharjah with a small pond and a wall fountain. The old pump has jammed with leaves twice this season and the water has turned green. The owner does not want a heavy, expensive unit. They want something light that can be pulled out, rinsed and dropped back in. That is exactly the job a PVC pond pump does well.
A sealed motor turns an impeller inside the pump housing. Water enters through the inlet screen, the impeller pushes it out through the discharge connection, and a hose or pipe carries it to a fountain head, a waterfall lip, a filter or a drain. Because the pump is below the water line it never has to pull water upwards, so it starts instantly and needs no priming.
The body is moulded from PVC, which is light and does not rust. That makes the pump easy to lift in and out of a pond or pit. The trade-off is that PVC is less tough than metal, so it is most suitable for clean to lightly dirty water and out of harsh mechanical use.

| Application | Typical setting | Why a PVC pump fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ornamental and koi ponds | Villa gardens, hotels, courtyards | Quiet circulation in clean water |
| Small fountains and waterfalls | Entrances, landscaped areas | Light unit, easy to lift out and clean |
| Garden drainage | Low spots, planters, small pits | Low cost, runs well with a float switch |
| Pool cover and terrace water | Removing rain or standing water | Portable, drains to a hose |
| Small tank and drum emptying | Water tanks and drums | Compact, no priming |
| Temporary dewatering of clean water | Maintenance pits and sumps | Quick to place and remove |
Typical use cases: refreshing a pond before a family event, draining a terrace after a rainy week, emptying a rooftop planter bed, keeping a courtyard waterfall running through the summer, or topping up a small tank from a pit.
| Problem | Without a pump | With a PVC submersible pump |
|---|---|---|
| Stagnant pond water | Algae, smell and mosquitoes build up | Moving water, easier to filter and keep clean |
| Flooded terrace or planter | Buckets and sponges | Hose to the drain, and a float switch can do it unattended |
| Fountain not running | Pump jams or is too heavy to service | Light pump you can lift out and rinse |
Choose PVC when cost, low weight and rust-free service matter most. Choose stainless steel when the pump is visible, used in sunlit or salty water, or expected to last through hard continuous use. Both Alden ranges are fully submersible.
| Point | PVC (DOLPHINE) | Stainless steel (WAVE) |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Moulded PVC | Stainless steel |
| Alden sizes | ½, 1 and 1½ HP | ½ and 1 HP |
| Weight and handling | Light, easy to lift | Heavier, more solid |
| Corrosion | Does not rust | Highly corrosion resistant |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Suited to | Circulation, garden drainage, small pits | Fountains, high-end features, tougher outdoor service |
Choose PVC when the budget is tight and the water is clean. Choose stainless when the pump will be on show or the setting is demanding. Compare both on our pond and fountain pumps page.
Common mistakes: buying a pump that is too small for the lift, letting it run dry, placing it on the silt floor, and using it for sandy or muddy water. Our submersible pump sizing guide explains flow and head step by step.
Typical good practice for outdoor water features is an RCD-protected circuit, a pump with an enclosed motor and a cable fitted with a proper watertight connection. Electrical work around ponds should be done by a qualified electrician. Ask us for the datasheet to check the ratings of the model you choose.
A compact electric pump with a PVC (plastic) body that works fully underwater. It circulates pond water, feeds fountains and waterfalls, or drains clean to lightly dirty water from pits and planters. Alden’s DOLPHINE range comes in ½, 1 and 1½ HP.
Alden supplies the DOLPHINE PVC pond pump in ½ HP, 1 HP and 1½ HP. Send us the pond volume, the lift to the fountain or discharge point and your supply voltage, and we will recommend the size and confirm the datasheet.
It can be, for circulation in clean water, as long as the flow is sized to the pond volume. Koi keepers typically aim to turn the pond volume over once or twice an hour, but confirm the target with your pond designer. Add a filter and a clean inlet screen.
The body material. PVC is light, does not rust and costs less, so it suits circulation and drainage. Stainless steel gives a high-end finish and tougher outdoor service life, so it suits visible fountains. Alden offers both: see pond pumps.
No. A pond pump is made for clean to lightly dirty water. Sand wears the impeller and fibres block the inlet. For muddy site water use a drainage pump, and for sewage use a sewage cutter pump.
Pond pumps are normally used for long running hours, provided the pump stays fully submerged and the water is cool and clean. Confirm the continuous-duty rating on the model datasheet before you install it on a 24-hour circuit.
For a fountain or pond circulation pump you usually do not. For drainage jobs such as a terrace pit, yes: a float switch starts the pump when water rises and stops it before the pump runs dry. Alden pond pumps are offered with a float switch option.
Yes. This is a common use. Place the pump on a flat base in the lowest spot, run the hose to a drain, and add a float switch so it switches itself off when the water is gone. Never leave it running dry.
Submerged, the water keeps the body cool. Plastics can age if the pump, hose or cable sit in direct summer sun, so keep them in shade or under water where possible. If the pump is left outdoors, ask us where to place it.
Most UAE homes have a single-phase supply, normally 230 V at 50 Hz, but the exact rating depends on the model. Tell us your supply when you request a quote and we will confirm the correct pump. Use an RCD-protected circuit outdoors.
Keep the inlet screen clean, lift the pump out and rinse it every few months, and stand it on a base off the pond floor so it does not pull in silt. A pre-filter box around the pump helps in ponds with heavy leaf fall.
Yes. Our pump repair and service team in Sharjah and Dubai looks after Alden pumps, including worn seals, blocked impellers and burnt-out motors.
