Submersible vs Centrifugal Pump: Differences & Uses
Where the pump sits changes everything — priming, noise, maintenance and cost. Here is how to decide.
Read guideRHINO steel body submersible pumps from 1 to 3 hp, built for lifting water to roof tanks, high floors and long distribution lines with a robust, corrosion-resistant body.

A high head submersible pump is a pump built to deliver water against a large vertical lift or long pipe run. Alden’s RHINO series has a steel body and covers 1 to 3 hp.
Head is the height a pump can lift water, measured in metres. When you need to send water to a roof tank, a hill-side tank or a long irrigation line, you need a pump that keeps delivering at high head. The RHINO pump combines a durable steel body with a multi-stage design for that job.
Compared with a surface pump, a submersible high-head pump needs no priming and avoids suction-lift limits because it sits in the water. It is a good fit where tanks are deep, wells are narrow or noise must be minimised.

| Application | Typical setting | Why RHINO |
|---|---|---|
| Roof tank filling | Villas, apartments, small buildings | Lifts water to height without priming |
| Hillside & long-line irrigation | Farms, estates | Maintains pressure over long distances |
| Water supply from deep tanks | Underground storage | Submerged intake avoids suction problems |
| Fountains & water features | Taller jets and waterfalls | Higher head for taller displays |
Head is the height, in metres, to which a pump can lift water. Total head includes vertical lift plus friction losses in the pipe.
Alden’s RHINO steel body submersible high head pump is available from 1 hp to 3 hp.
Yes — high-head submersible pumps are commonly used to fill roof tanks from underground tanks.
Submersibles need no priming and are quiet; surface pumps are easier to access. The best choice depends on the site — see our comparison guide.
